RDW: Vehicle registration and inspections for taxi drivers

What is the RDW?

The National Road Transport Agency (RDW) is the Dutch government agency responsible for the admission and registration of vehicles and driving licenses. The RDW is an important authority for taxi drivers when it comes to vehicle inspections, license plate registration and technical requirements.

Requirements for a taxi vehicle

A vehicle used as a taxi must meet additional technical requirements in addition to the regular MOT:

• APK inspection: Annual inspection mandatory for vehicles older than 1 year
• Tax meter: Mandatory and calibrated taximeter for street taxi
• Registration certificate: In the name of the owner or company
• Vehicle category: Passenger car (M1) or minibus (M2) depending on the type of transport
• Emission standards: Certain municipalities apply emission zone requirements

Via the RDW you can:

• Register or transfer a license plate
• Request or check vehicle data
• Register technical changes to a vehicle
• An export permit apply

Driving license for taxi drivers

In addition to a regular driving license B, as a taxi driver you need a driver card (taxi pass). You can request this from the CBR, not from the RDW. You can view driving license information and have driving licenses exchanged via the RDW.
