As an independent taxi driver (self-employed) you are your own boss. Read all about the rules, taxes, insurance and benefits of being self-employed in the taxi industry.

Self-employed taxi driver: the basics

More and more taxi drivers are choosing to be self-employed: driving independently, determining their own rates and choosing your own customers. But as a self-employed person you are also responsible for taxes, insurance and pensions. Here you can read everything you need to know.

Benefits of being a self-employed taxi driver

  • Own boss: You decide when you drive and for whom
  • Own rates: You set your own price
  • Tax benefits: Self-employed deduction, starter deduction and SME profit exemption
  • Flexibility: Combine taxi work with other assignments

Tax as a self-employed taxi driver

As an independent taxi driver you pay:

  • Income tax on your profit (turnover minus costs)
  • VAT: Passenger transport falls under the 0% VAT rate
  • Self-employed deduction: Deduction if you work more than 1225 hours per year

Insurance you need as a self-employed person

  • Business liability insurance (AVB)
  • Disability insurance (AOV)
  • Taxi insurance (other than private car insurance)

Pension as a self-employed taxi driver

As a self-employed person, you do not build up a pension through an employer. Arrange your own pension provision in a timely manner, such as an annuity insurance or bank savings account.
